Coral Prints - at Mecox Dallas

Love the branching structure of coral.  It's like underwater trees without the leaves.  In beautiful colors.  These prints are done in lithograph and liquid tusche in order to enhance the watery image with a watery medium.

 

Fluidity

In these two paintings, I'm working with the concept of how we interpret color and pattern.  Scientists have lately understood the human interprets visual information in two different parts of the brain: line in the ancient, fight or flight mode, and color in an evolutionarily newer area of the brain.  I observe that line supersedes color in the interpretation and visual experience of an art work.  I'm happily exploring this idea while manipulating my paint to stress its fluid properties.

Kathryn Polk came to Brookhaven as a visiting artist in December to give a color lithography workshop.  This print and its companion are the result of learning more about smart plates and color litho.

Flowers are possibly nature's best imagination.  They come in all kinds of crazy shapes and colors, yet we still call them simply, flowers.

Light Comes Streaming In

I'm trying to work with fewer forms and more color and stroke.  It's less about the image being portrayed and more about the emotional response to the painting.  I find this approach much more difficult than painting realistic forms.  Hard is good.

Sometimes paintings just have to change - in this case from a very flat view of space to a view of objects with more weight and shape.   I enjoy aspects of both views, but the second one is where it ends up this time.

I'm still in love with this ceramic dog from Aspen - he showed up again in this print named "Sniff".   16"x26" framed.

New Prints

Back to Printmaking.  These prints are a combination of Lithography and Silkscreen.  Underlayers are produced in color inks from drawn Litho plates, then overscreened with a different image and different colors.  All inspired by nature and this past summer's travels in the American West.

 
 

Anderson Ranch

I just got back from Aspen and Anderson Ranch, a lovely art ranch filled with art happenings and classes.  Coincidentally there was a symposium on "Making the Change you Want to See" there, where Steve McQueen (12 Years a Slave director) spoke.  I took a class from Emilio Perez on abstraction and layering.  Here are a few paintings from that week.  So fun.

A Week In Taos

I just spent 6 days in Taos,New Mexico with a plein air painting group led by Suzanne Kelley-Clark.  We spent part of each day in the field, part in the studio.  Taos weather is predictably changeable, going from extreme dryness to afternoon monsoon rains with boiling clouds and lightning.  It's best to get indoors when those clouds decide to break open.

 

These paintings were an effort to capture the mood and beauty of the subject space in a minimalistic and graphic representation.

Grand Canyon Dreaming

After 8 days rafting thru the Grand Canyon in May, I dreamed every night about riding down the Colorado River.  During the day we (fourteen souls) bounced down the river rapids on a big raft driven by our experienced guides from Arizona Raft Adventures.  We took side hikes to see the beautiful turquoise water of the Little Colorado, the ancient pictograms, and canyon waterfalls.  At night we slept on cots thrown down in the sand a few feet from the river, and lay under innumerable stars and (later) the full moon.  Any light for reading brought swooping bats and moths.  Had to do a couple of drawings/paintings, just to get the experience out of my daily consciousness.

Feathered Friends

I like the imagery of birds.  Birds come in all shapes, sizes, colors, and designs.  Fierce occupants of the trees, bushes, ground and skies, they exist all over the earth.  We envy their flight and admire their coats.  Wouldn't it be nice if the dodo bird and the passenger pigeon were still around?  Here are some of my favorites from the Texas landscape.  These prints are combinations of Lithograph and Serigraph, and measure 24" x 20".
