A Week In Taos

I just spent 6 days in Taos,New Mexico with a plein air painting group led by Suzanne Kelley-Clark.  We spent part of each day in the field, part in the studio.  Taos weather is predictably changeable, going from extreme dryness to afternoon monsoon rains with boiling clouds and lightning.  It's best to get indoors when those clouds decide to break open.

These paintings were an effort to capture the mood and beauty of the subject space in a minimalistic and graphic representation.

Grand Canyon Dreaming

After 8 days rafting thru the Grand Canyon in May, I dreamed every night about riding down the Colorado River.  During the day we (fourteen souls) bounced down the river rapids on a big raft driven by our experienced guides from Arizona Raft Adventures.  We took side hikes to see the beautiful turquoise water of the Little Colorado, the ancient pictograms, and canyon waterfalls.  At night we slept on cots thrown down in the sand a few feet from the river, and lay under innumerable stars and (later) the full moon.  Any light for reading brought swooping bats and moths.  Had to do a couple of drawings/paintings, just to get the experience out of my daily consciousness.

This view is from the Navaho Bridge at the beginning of our trip, near put-in at Lee's Ferry.

Feathered Friends

I like the imagery of birds.  Birds come in all shapes, sizes, colors, and designs.  Fierce occupants of the trees, bushes, ground and skies, they exist all over the earth.  We envy their flight and admire their coats.  Wouldn't it be nice if the dodo bird and the passenger pigeon were still around?  Here are some of my favorites from the Texas landscape.  These prints are combinations of Lithograph and Serigraph, and measure 24" x 20".

Great Texas Women

I've started a series of prints about great Texas women.  A large part of the fun is learning/remembering what made these women so memorable and trying to capture that spirit in the print.

Ann Richards, 45th Texas Guv

Cynthia Ann Parker

Barbara Jordan, Texas Giant

Janis Joplin just begged to be printed in different colors.

Mecox Gardens

Much of my unsold work is hung and available at Mecox Gardens, a lovely art, art objects, and design store in Dallas.  David Lee, store manager, is a great mentor and art appreciator.  It's a treat to visit the store and see the absolutely beautiful and unique things they have for sale.  Here's a new painting, Silent Swans, 42" x 48".

2013 Paintings on Paper

These paintings are more abstracted views of the figure.  I like to start on paper which has been textured with lithograph ink. Then I paint from a live model, working quickly with acrylic paint and pastel chalks to capture the mood.

Imaginary Realism  - As my paintings become more abstract, I think these words are a good way to describe my work.  I like to paint imaginary places, where the forms are recognizable but not literal.  And where color abounds.

2013 prints

These black and white prints are aluminum plate lithographs.  I love to work in this medium because of the unusual and beautiful reticulation which is only achievable in lithography with a little luck.  I refer to lithography as the magical medium, because the process is somewhat mysterious and prone to failure.
